Default A few Questions Concerning Monks. . .

Well, m relativly new to the game, iv only had one character go post searing and i scrapped him cuz i didnt like him. Iv never played a monk, and i have a few questions.

Is it possible to have a monk who can do damage in pve, and not just heal. Also possibly be good for farming. But i wantthe primary profession be a monk, casue they look the real cool, lol.

thanks

Smiting monks can be mighty powerful. There's a whole monk attribute devoted to damage-dealing. Just be sure your party knows you are a smiting monk so they don't freak out when you don't heal them.

What I suggest is you bring healing spells/protection spells when you are in a party, and smiting spells when you are soloing. Most smiting skills are AoE skills, and when playing in a group, monsters tend to attack different targets spreading them out and reducing the effectiveness of AoE.

A standard smiting build:

Zealot's Fire
Healing Hands
Balthazaar's aura
Symbol of Wrath
Divine Boon
Balthazaar's spirit (only if you are going to be surrounded by many monsters)
Healing touch

The last skill is pretty optional. Mending can work, as can anything else for what you are doing.

What you do is cast balthazaar's spirit, and or mending if you use it. Then get yourself surrounded by melee mobs. Cast the order I listed the skills, so zealot's fire, healing hands, Balthazaar's aura, and symbol of wrath. Then continuosly use divine boon. Divine boon is used to trigger zealot's fire into doing damage, and it has a fast cast time and low cooldown so it works great. Balthazaar's spirit will keep your mana up, but watch out for when healing hands runs out. When it does, you will be taking considerable damage.

Also note that some people prefer Mark of Protection to healing hands, however, mark of protection requires 15 mana as opposed to the 5 by healing hands, and has a longer cooldown.

If you ever do find the right build, you can farm solo in the underworld. O_o Which is what I am currently doing. ;3

As a smiting monk, you can truly deal some serious damage, but you can do even more depending on your secondary profession. Just make sure you save some room in your skill slots for healing yourself and party!

As a Monk/Necro, I could do 100 points of damage and slow foes to 50% in the opening seconds of a battle, then concentrate on healing. Now I mostly concentrate on healing (though I kept my slow skill just to help out the party).

I love being a monk.

Since you're new with the game there's an extra tidbit that I'm sure you'll find very helpful (if you haven't learned about it already)

You can refund your attributes, taking them off skills you've added to already and putting them back into your storage. This gives you unlimited versatility and experimentation but you can't do this too often in a short time span. Everytime you do it you lose a "refund point" of which you have 24 total. That's plenty of points needed to fully rearrange your build, but not quite enough to change back afterwards. However, you gain 1 refund point for every 250 xp you get so worst case scenario is you have to live with the current build for a few hours or a few gaming sessions before you can change back.

Apologies if you already knew about this (I don't know what's in the manual), but as you said you were new and nobody else mentioned it I thought it was worth bringing up

Refund points save your butt.
As for smiting monks, just know it will be much harder to find a decent group though, because if you dont heal, to most people you arent a monk. People are stupid.

this is fact.

My Mo/Ele is far more effective as a damage dealer in the shiverpeaks...however I couldn't get a group without going full heal through Borlis Pass & Frost Gate...

you have more freedom if you group with the henchies...they allow you to do whatever you want.

Mo/Necro could be a good primary/secondary selection in that you can use well of blood to heal yourself instead of a combination of healing breeze and orison and not have to devote as many points into your monk healing attribute.

If you are new to the game and this is your first character, then another note, monks require a good deal of patience, since there is a tendancy for monks to be blamed for a failed quest of mission. If you can't take people calling you a 'n00b' or constantly seeing 'heal plz' or 'rez plz', you might want to try a different build first.

I have an E/Mo that I was considering swapping over to a combination of Energy Storage / Healing / Smiting.

That way I'd have this tremendous pile of Energy that I could use for those Smiting Prayers, and use Balthazar's Spirit to recharge it.

The only problem with this one is that I'd never be able to have Smiting skill higher than 12, but it's then a toss-up whether twice as much energy equates to 16 skill.

Great Farmer Build is Mo/W...
Healing Hands
Balanced Stance
Balthazaar's Aura
Symbol of Wrath
Healing Touch
Zealot's Fire
Sprint
Reversel of Fortune
Just sprint around to get a big group, Hit the Zealot's Fire, Balthazaar's Aura, Zealot's Fire, and Spam reversel of Fortune and watch everything die...

I just got this. You need a good team of lvl 20s, and you have to plow thru hours of mobs to get to teh boss you want. Our group found him last.

He's my gift to you all
